Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “ God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
1.Peter 5:5-7

A thankful heart is a heart open to the supernatural grace and favour of God.  Thanksgiving is a supernatural act.  It enables you to enter his gates.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise!
Give thanks to him; bless his name!
Psalm 100:4

When you give thanks your heart is redirected to enter awareness of His presence.  You go through gates, in your inner being, towards His river of supply.  It redirects your heart.  It rightly relates you to Father.

When we give thanks, we are acknowledging that what we have, we have received.  We grasp that what we have, we did not earn.  If we had earned it, then it is rightly due to us by dint of our own effort.  When we are grateful, we acknowledge that the grace and favour of God has supplied our needs.

This means that you are coming in true humility.  True humility says, “I am totally dependent on Him, and He is totally dependable”.  Rather than grasping with our own effort we are open handedly receiving from the father.  It puts you in a place to receive again and receive more.  It enables God to exalt you, without the sorrow that pride brings.  You are in a position to be lifted up.

God’s love for us is beyond comprehension.  It is scandalously lavish.  He loves us with abandon and without compromise.  Grasp the enormity of the next few words from the Holy Spirit though Paul to us…

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?
Romans 8:32

He has not only lavished the love of His Son’s passion on us, but intends for us to inherit all things… mind blowing!

If we think we can earn His love by our goodness, it is religious pride.  Humility acknowledges our dependence and receives with thanksgiving.  Then the channels for God’s supernatural abundance are being opened over our lives.  Let’s cultivate, now, a thankful stance in our hearts, receiving his love and letting that gratefulness pour out through our mouths.  This attracts heaven!
